The group welcomed Mark D. Zoback, a leading American geophysicist and the Benjamin M. Page Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University, California, USA. Dr. Zoback’s visit comes as part of the Joint Colloquium titled “Utilizing Physics-Based Models to Manage the Risk of Injection-Induced Seismicity Associated with Unconventional Oil and Gas Production”. The colloquium was jointly sponsored by the Department of Physics & NSERC/Energi Simulation Chair in Fundamental Rock Physics and Rock Mechanics (Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering) at the University of Toronto.
Prior to the talk, Dr. Zoback toured the Geomechanics Hub. In the tour, Dr. Zoback was introduced to the facilities within the Geomechanics Hub that showcased the capabilities of the research group. During the visit, students and Dr. Zoback also engaged in conversation to better their understanding of geomechanical phenomena in their research and their importance in the ever-developing field of rock mechanics.
