Biography
Katherine Westerlund earned her BASc in Geological Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 2020. Katherine then worked in the industry for three years as a Geotechnical EIT, with a focus on both urban civil infrastructure tunnel projects and rural mine access tunnel projects. Katherine is currently working towards a MASc in Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto with the goal to expand her knowledge of modelling, data science, and machine learning applications to underground engineering problems. Her research interests range from data science applications to large geotechnical datasets, the integration of machine learning and automation with modern geotechnical modelling practices, and the integration of sustainability principals into large scale infrastructure projects. Katherine is the Canadian representative on the International Tunnelling Association’s Working Group 15 (Underground and Environment) and a subject matter expert on the ITA’s Special Committee on Sustainability. Outside of the lab Katherine is an avid runner, completing many trail races and several marathons. She loves coffee, cooking, and all things outdoors.
